A single, easily accessible repository of available data. this will enable more transparent decision-making, create efficient coordination between organisations and ultimately allow for everyone to build cultural, environmental, and economic resilience in the Mataura catchment.
The viewer can be used to look at a wide area, such as the Mataura River Catchment as a whole, or to dive into individual areas and tributaries. It will allow navigation through a number of data layers to find a view of what activities are occurring within the catchment. The main layers of the viewer will be in relation to any ongoing projects. Our aim is to ensure the following specific attributes are captured:
- The area of the project
- The name of the project
- The people/groups involved in the project
- A brief overview of the project
- The intended outcome for the project
- The project timeframe
- A link to more external information
The GIS viewer prototype can be found here. This will continue to be updated and iterated as new information and functionality is built.
A helpful Mataura GIS Viewer Instructions sheet can also be found here (PDF, 418.04 kB) for further assistance.
Current State
- No central data repository for projects and consents relating to the Mataura Catchment
- Unknown gaps in data coverage
- Duplication of data collection
- A vast number of groups operating on the Mataura River with no way to efficiently coordinate
- An unhealthy river system in need of care and support through collaboration.
What We Plan to Achieve
- Better understand what activities are happening where, and by whom
- Help individuals and organisations with their own information needs and to respond to enquiries
- Potential for greater support and advisory functions
- Improve decision making by being aware of discrepancies in information in advance of planning and future intentions
- Encourage collaboration between groups to deliver better project outcomes.
